You’ve fed and raised your meat heads and now these large breasted warblers are clearly harvest ready, do you have what you need?

As has been discussed before, you can hire someone to process your chickens for you, but for us this was not a cost effective way to go through that process. Thankfully we talked to several people that had performed chicken harvest and before we got too invested in the plucking aspects of chicken processing (arguably the most difficult component), we decided to go the skinning route.

For us, a sharp knife proved much more effective, simpler and safer than utilizing a sharp axe (trial and error). Slip knots for securing the chickens legs, with a rebar tie fashioned into a hoop for hanging (using what you have) the chicken during slaughter. A good knife with a sharpener, as you will need to keep your blade sharp during the process. A hose for keeping your chickens, your tools and your surface clean during the processing.

Shown as well is our harvest surface, we will discuss this in greater detail later, but we would suggest using a surface that enables you to stand fully erect during processing as spending a long period of time hunched over can be painful (trial and error).

Do you have any tricks for chicken harvest?

Have you been considering raising and harvesting your own chickens? In this video we share what we have learned about harvesting a chicken.

We go through slaughter, skinning (we choose to skin instead of plucking) and gutting the chicken in this video.

We would love to get feedback on how you harvest your chickens and maybe learn some new techniques.
